Pear – The Scarlett O’hara in the Fruit World

Pear is a deciduous tree or shrub, and a few species are evergreen. The leaves are oval in shape and vary in size. Flowers are white, or slightly yellow, pink, with five petals. Fruit comes with round shape. There are some other with small base but thick tail, commonly known as “pear shaped”.  Fruit skin comes with varies shades of yellow or green, yellowish green, green with yellow, brown, green brown, red brown, and brown.  There are some even with purple red.  Wild pear fruit size, between 1 to 4 cm, and cultivated varieties of fruit diameter up to 8 cm, up to 18 cm in length.

Pear fruit is usually used for food, not only delicious, juicy, sweet but with little sour, and also rich in nutrition, contain a lots of vitamins and fibers, different kinds of pears taste and texture are completely different.

Pears are mostly eaten raw.  With its 90% of water content, it can help to sooth constipation, indigestion, and even cardiovascular problems.  After removing the seeds and cooking it with beet sugar, it can also help to sooth asthma, cough, fever, acne, diuretic and embellish functions.  

Pear is rich in sugar, protein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals that are essential human health. Pear has the function of clearing throat and nourishing lung. It help to lower chance of catching cold, so scientists and doctors call them “all healthy fruits” or “general practitioners”.

As our modern living has worsen our air quality, pear is getting more important with its ability to  improve the respiratory system and lung function, has the effect of moistening lung, can reduce the lung by dust and dust in the air. Pear can also preserved as dried pears, pear juice, canned pears, and also can be make into wine and vinegar.  The sugar content of pear is below 15%, the daily consumption can be 300-500 grams, and the diabetic can be eaten. Pear flesh crisp juicy, sweet and delicious, nutritious, healthy.

MSN web site of the United States pointed out that the rich dietary fiber in pears, can help people reduce cholesterol content, help weight loss. The United States nutritionists study also found that each pear contains 10 grams of cholesterol lowering dietary fiber, meet the body’s daily dietary fiber demand 40%. There are some precaution need to be aware of when taking in pear:

  1. Pear has cooling effect.  Those who are fear of cold should eat less.
  2. Pear is also acidic, those with gastric should only take small amount after food.
  3. Pear has diuretic effect, frequent toilet goers should avoid eating pears before bedtime.
  4. Pears contain high sugar, diabetes should be cautious. Chronic enteritis, stomach disease patients should not eat raw pears.
  5. Pear contains acid, thus not to take with alkaline drug use, such as aminophylline, soda etc..
  6. The pear should not eat together with the crab, as this will cause diarrhea.
  7. To eat pears with hot water, greasy food will cause diarrhea as well.
