Purple Cabbage – A Good Abnormal Cabbage

Purple cabbage, it is a variant of cabbage species in Brassicaceae, Brassica, a type of cabbage. The leaf and leaf ball is in purple red, that’s why it is called purple cabbage.  Other than, the shape and the even the size is the same as the normal cabbage.

The leaves are purplish red, with wax powder on the surface and nearly round in the leaf ball. It is especially rich in vitamin C, vitamin U and many more in vitamin E and B complex.

Purple cabbage plant can span out to about 50 cm wide, with about 20 leaves, leaves are in suborbicular shape with about 33 cm long, 30 cm wide, purplish red in color. It has light green color near the veins while the ribs are in deep red color. There is oblate leaf ball in the middle at about 12 cm high, diameter 20 cm, purplish red shiny leaf ball weighing 1.5 to 2 kg.

Purple cabbage is a vegetable that prefers cool climates. The outer leaves like the temperature between 20 and 25 degree Centigrade.

When it needs to form the leave ball, it prefers even a cooler temperature between 15 and 25 degree Centigrade with higher humidity.  Purple cabbage can also withstand a short duration low temperature between -5 and -7 degree Centigrade.

Cabbage needs sunlight all day long, it will form leaf ball in its first year. Cabbage needs more water, and nitrates is the most important nutrient for cabbage. Although it can adapt to many types of soil, it is best to sandy loam or clay loam with deep and fertile soil layer and with good drainage.
