Raspberry – The “Golden Fruit”

Raspberry, with the scientific name of Rubus idaeus L., is a plant of Rubus family. It is a kind of fruit with sweet and sour taste and long barb on the stem of the plant.

Raspberry fruit is a kind of polymerization fruit, and come with red, gold and black in color.  It is considered as fruit in Europe and America.  It is also widely distributed in the wild in China but few people know it. Only a small amount of cultivation in Northeast of China.  It is hard to find in the market of China. Raspberry plant can be used as medicine and has many medicinal values, and its fruit has the function of invigorating kidney. Raspberry oil contains unsaturated fatty acid, which can help to promote the secretion of the hormone of prostate.

Raspberry usually grows at the forest edge, mountain slopes or wilderness, between the altitude of 500-2000 meters. It likes the warm and humid weather, with good scattering light and not so picky to types of soil.

Raspberry is a small shrub, start fruiting after two years’ growing. 3rd year has higher yield and reaches peak on year 4 and 5.  It can keeping producing fruits up to 15 years. Raspberry root is shallow, fruit production may be effected if there is prolong drought.  It start flowering from April to May and start fruiting from June to July. 

As it can grow in most types of soil, raspberry is widely distributed in many provinces in China including Liaoning, Jilin, Inner Mongolia, Fujian, Hebei, Henan, Shandong, Shanxi, Jiangsu, Anhui, Yunnan, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Hunan (mostly at the mountain slopes in Yanling County), Hubei, Guangxi, Guangdong, Shaanxi, Guizhou, Sichuan, Chongqing, Gansu, Xinjiang and other regions.  It also found in other countries like Japan, Siberia, Central Asia, North America and Europe as well.

Raspberry has been cultivated mainly for fruits in Europe since very early days. Raspberry fruit contains a wealth of vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium, potassium, magnesium and many other nutrients and a large amount of fibers. In every 100 grams of raspberry, it contains 87% of water, 0.9 grams of protein, 4.7 grams of fiber and 209.3 calories. Raspberry can effectively relieve angina and other cardiovascular diseases, but sometimes it can cause mild diarrhea. Raspberry fruit tastes sweet with a bit of sour.  Sometime it is being called as the “golden fruit”. Raspberry is rich in salicylic acid, phenolic acids and other substances. Salicylic acid is consider as “natural aspirin”, which is widely used for analgesia, antipyretic, anti-coagulation, and can effectively prevent thrombosis. Long term consumption of raspberry can effectively protect the heart, prevent hypertension, vascular wall atherosclerosis, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular brittle fracture and other cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases.

Besides as fruit, raspberry is used in many types of pastries such as Raspberry chocolate cake and so on. It can also be used as one of the ingredient in some delicious soups or something like raspberry milk jelly and so on.

The medical value of raspberry is not only from its fruit but also from its stem.  It has been proven to be able to improve the health of kidney, liver and also eye especially.
